First time using and it broke

Lucinda75 7/26/2019

I bought this product less than a month ago and the first time trying to use the 5/8 sausage stuffer it broke I had to throw out whole deal with sausage before I even realized that the piece of crack and little Parts have gone into my sausage, don't get me wrong I love my KitchenAid and most of my attachments however this one was quite a disappointment to say the least on top of the cost of the food. And even though I have quite a few attachments I am very skeptical about buying the few more than I wanted due to this.

Don't last

Dadof7 3/1/2019

Works good but My first one developed a crack on the side by the metal housing that goes in machine after a couple of years of use I bought another and after 1.5 to 2 yrs this one cracked worse by the metal also but on top Not sure if plastics are not made good or what but I will probably be trying the steel one this time.

Needs improvement

Kay R 2/16/2019

We've used our grinder & stuffer 6 times now. It works but is very slow & you need to people to reduce frustration. Key issues for us were: 1. Need a grinding disk that grinds the bigger pieces more coarse (3/8's is pretty standard for other machines). A coarse grind followed by the finer grind is recommended by sausage makers for best results. 2. Pushing the meat into the hopper is where the air gets in & causes problems. And is the reason you need 2 people. Seems like a larger hopper with a hinged lid plunger would help.

Sausage stuffer doesn't work

MechEnginner 12/23/2018

The critical reviews are correct! The plastic grinder works ok not great. It grinds meat well once it gets into the worm screw area. I tried stuffing sausage, what a glorious waste of time. The ground meat doesn't feed into the worm area, The ground meat just extrudes out around the plastic plunger provided with the grinder. I wonder if any of the design team actually tried to use this thing. It gives mechanical engineers a bad name.

Confusion

Pretty Girl 12/9/2018

Here is what I don't understand: if you have so many loyal followers (customers) pointing out the same flaws about this product (sausage stuffer), why are you still selling it? Why wouldn't you just go back to drawing board and make the improvements? I get it may be costly on the front end, but in the back end it will pay for itself exponentially.

Years of Success

Craftsjunkie 8/1/2018

I've been using this stuffer for years. I've had great success. It is so easy to use that I can do it by myself (Of course, it is more fun with a partner!) I am replacing it because after many years, both sizes of tubes have cracked. It is not a quality issue, I just wore them out. Will be buying same brand!

Good tool.

Tanktonic 3/22/2018

I make a lot of home made sausage. In about 5lb batches. I replaced the pusher with an oak dowel, as the plastic pusher gathers as much meat as is passed through. I enjoy this device immensely and use it often. In fact I have worn out the tubes and will be replacing them.

great attachment

HeatherH 1/7/2018

Not sure why bad reviews. This was my first time for sausage and casings and the biggest issue I had was trying to open the very small sheep casing. I watched a video prior to purchase to see how it went and had only a couple issues. One being working with sheep casing as first time, I had two areas where the casing was ripped and sausage was popping slightly out and slightly uneven plumpness on first casing which I think was from me pulling on the sausage coming out. The second and third casings were almost perfect. Yes the first casing went slow as I tried to figure things out but once I got to my second all went smoothly. I used coconut oil on the tube and kept my hands and the casing wet with warm water. I've only recently purchase this so I can't address how it holds up over time but I'm pleased at this point in time

First Time Sausage Maker

Ben K 12/29/2017

I made my first sausage ever with this today and had no problems. The price is right. I didn't have any issues with cracks or any physical issues. This was my first time making sausage and we made 3 pounds. I would say that any issues I had with air bubbles came from being new to this skill, rather than any problems with the equipment, with some practice, I was able to prevent air bubbles. I found it a little difficult to work the meat through the grinder tray and pull the sausage at the same time. But with some practice, I was able to do both tasks by myself. I would recommend this. For the price, you can't really go wrong.

Poor design

northstar8713 12/13/2017

I too bought this stuffer kit a number of years ago, I have struggled over and over again with the plunger design and now both stuffing tubes have cracked around the opening and have broken off. I continued to struggle with this set up until they both broke. Now I want to replace the tubes but unsure if I wouldn't be better off with another brand if there has been no improvement.

For Better Speed: Add Water to Sausage Mix

Chen 12/1/2017

I see many people writing negative comments on this sausage stuff because they are having problems feeding the meat through the apparatus and the solution is to add liquid to the mix like water or cider. I have had the same problem many here describe on other sausage stuffing equipment not made by Kitchenaid but through lots of trial and error found the secret to good sausage making is adding water to the mix. When the mix is too lean the problem becomes worse and more water is needed. Meat will dry out quickly after it is ground and this is the reason for fresh meat being preferred. The nearer the time after slaughtering the animal the better the performance of the meat mix. If you are worried about too much water in the mix then expirament by incrementally adding water to the mix until the proper flow through the sausage stuffing tube is achieved. You may even need to add more after the mix sits for a time. I hope this helps everyone!) BTW Kitchenaid is owned by Hobart, which is a highend manufacturer of industrial food processing equipment.

Slow, Slow, Slow

Ed S-J 11/25/2017

My wife and I tried to do approx. 30 lbs. (I know it's alot). However, the speed of the sausage stuffer was ungodly slow. We finally had to put some in freezer bags so we could get some sleep. Maybe the sausage stuffer is good for very small batches but that is it.

First Time Sausage Maker Success

cfomahm 10/10/2017

I read all the reviews of this product and was really worried it would not work properly. WRONG. I never made sausage before. In fact I had never even used a meat grinder before. I looked at numerous videos of sausage making before I tried for the first time and paid attention to 1) keeping the meat cold, 2) not trying to force the meat down the feeder - let gravity and the machine do the job, and 3) greasing the horn before putting the casings on it. Neither the grinding or the stuffing is lightning fast. You have to have patience. Don't try to push the meat down the feeder too hard and do not set your speed too high (I used #1). It will all get there and you do not have to watch it every moment, especially during the grinding process. It was actually pretty easy. Just keep putting your meat back in the fridge to keep it cold between loads on the feeder tray. I added my spices after the first grind, put the meat through again on fine and then fried up a sample to test for taste. I did not need a second pair of hands to deal with the link as it came off the stuffer. If you keep the machine on low, the sausage will not come out so fast that you can't control the fill. No problem at all with air in the casing. I made 5# of Italian last night and 5# of breakfast this morning. As I said, I never did this before and it was EASY. (Except for turning it into links. It was hard to get them the same size but that is user error, not the KitchenAid. I need some experience under my belt to get better at it.)

Kitchen Aid Grinder Stuffer

7/2/2017

Bought the Grinder and Sausage Stuffer. Don't waste your time. Feed neck is small, and plunger design is a mess. Much smaller than opening so meat gets caught around it when going through a second grind. Does okay on first bring is the mead is really cold but worm gear doesn't want to grab the meat. Be prepared to work hard and be very frustrated. Stuffing Sausage.....forget it! Lots of air from bad plunger design.

Needs two people but works great

6/22/2017

Main point- it takes 2 people. One putting the meat in and one on the other side with the casing. Like this it works great with few problems. Only issue we have is we've used it so much, the part of the tube the connects to the grinder is cracking. Thankfully it's a rather inexpensive kit. Well worth it in my opinion

Waste of time and money!

6/8/2017

Bought this to start making my own sausage to smoke in my smoker. Tried it one time and swore that I wasn't even cleaning it and just throwing the unless plastic in the trash. Somehow my wife found, cleaned and put it away and then encouraged me to try it one more time. Should have thrown it away last time, just like I threw away my money when I purchased it. Pros: Not one single thing I can think of. The plunger is close to 1/4" smaller than the neck of the stuffer so when you are trying to push the meat through the worm gear you just have all of the meat squeeze up and around the plunger. 25 minutes into the task I wound up with 2" of something you could possibly call sausage. All I really managed to stuff into the casings was air. Not sure how this even made it on the shelf to be sold to anyone. Save your money and look away.

Sausage stuffer kit,

5/29/2017

I have used the kit on and off for three years. Every time I use it I swear that I will not use it again. The stuffing cones broke around the fat end neck. The meat must be near frozen to get it to go into the tube. It destroys cheese. I am done with it. Unless they come out with a replacement. Geo.

What a disappointment!

5/27/2017

I bought this sausage stuffer because I love my KitchenAid grinder, use it all the time and works great but the stuffer is a big disappointment. The plunger is not tight to push the meat down to the worm. The worm does not grab the meat do you are constantly trying to push the ground meat down with your fingers to get the air out ultimately getting a lot of air in your casing. I had watched a lot of the videos on using the stuffer and they looked so easy. It took an hour to do 1 pound of sausage because I had to keep stopping and manually work the air out of the casing. Not what I had expected.

Once and done

4/30/2017

What a nightmare. I wanted to love this so much. And then I used it. What a disaster... There is a major issue of air suction/vacuum with the tamper, and there is no gravity helping you whatsoever. The auger doesn't want to catch the meat at all unless you are constantly pushing down hard with the tamper... I would have been better off just sticking the meat in a pastry bag and squeezing it into the casing - at least then I wouldn't have to keep fighting the meat coming back out or getting stuck to the tamper. Absolute flop. The only upside is that it was pretty easy to clean. It took my husband and I 2-3 hours to stuff just under 5 lbs worth of sausage, and that was through sheer determination.

After reading so many negative comments, I was a little concerned. But for the price we thought we would try it. Following directions made the process simple and quick. Only downside was the size and design of the plunger. It let too much mix come back up the tube (easy to remedy). It is best with two people working it. You're not going to make several hundred pounds in an afternoon, but it is great for a 5-10 lb run for the family.

Very Disappointing!

4/11/2017

I purchased this specially for stuffing kielbasa but after last night I was very disappointed. It took such a long time to keep pushing the already butcher grinded meat that after 2 hrs, I had switched to a hand grinder which was so much easier. seems like pushing the meat down there is so much suction that the meat hardly comes out. Very poorly constructed and I hate to say I'll go back to the hand grinder that was my grandmothers.

Does not work well

4/9/2017

I've tried to use the sausage stuffer on several occasions. The meat grinder works just fine, but when you try to stuff the sausages, the meat flows around the plunger and won't feed the stuffer. This results in a very time consuming and frustrating process to do even small batches of sausages.

Kitchenaide bombed this one

2/11/2017

Considering the quality of the mixer I thought that I would give this a try. Its a disaster! Between the air bubbles being pushed into the meat casing the plunger not pushing the meat properly into hole the plunger constantly getting meat stuck all over it forcing you to clean it every couple of minutes, the meat barely going through, it's a horror what should have taken me 15 min took me almost two hours! Never again will I use this attachment.

Not worth getting

1/9/2017

You, basically, have to stuff the sausage with the plunger. The grind worm didn't push the sausage into the casing well at all. Even with steady and gentle pressure the sausage meat mostly oozed back up the feeder tube. Very bad design,

worked great for me.... first timer

1/5/2017

Received it as a gift. First time ever attempting to make my own sausages. I cubed the meat, put it in the freezer for a 1/2 hr, then ran it through the grinder, then mixed in herbs and seasonings. Then put it back in the freezer for another 1/2 hr to stiffen it up again. I then ran it through the grinder into the prepared natural casing. I had to work it a bit the fill the casing evenly and push out a little air here and there. But I thought it went pretty smoothly considering it was the first time I used this thing. There was one thing that i didn't like but it wasn't a gamechanger. The grinder got a little warm after running it for a while. I put it in the freezer with the meat before grinding/stuffing the second round. As long as the meat was cold enough to start with, it never got too warm by the time I got into the casing. I'm no Abe Froman, but I think the negative reviews were due to user error or too high of expectations.... I thought this unit worked rather well, especially for the price. Just don't expect to crank out 100 sausages an hour.

Worked fine for me.

12/18/2016

Was totally impressed with the grinder attachment for processing deer, and wanted to try making sausage, too, so bought the sausage maker kit. I'm with the last reviewer -- I think the people with negative reviews must have been doing something wrong. I just made 5 lbs. of pepper sticks and it went very smoothly. Had none of the problems described below, with the exception of one or two air bubbles; even that was rare, and a pin hole solved it. The meat I used was ground fine beforehand, which I'm guessing makes a big difference. Trying to grind AND stuff simultaneously doesn't seem to work, which is probably why the instructions don't recommend that. I had a helper feeding the ground meat while I stuffed the casings, which definitely helped -- I think I could have done it single-handed, but it wouldn't have been as easy. All in all, the sausage maker worked fine, and I would definitely recommend it to a friend. I was skeptical when my wife wanted to buy one of the pricier KitchenAid mixers. But I've processed eight deer in the last two months with it, and I'm a believer. Hobart it ain't, but it's pretty darn good.

Don't believe the negative reviews, they're doing it wrong.

12/2/2016

The attachment works perfectly. The complaints about the plunger being too small and the air in the casing is due to user error. A little bit of air gets into every sausage maker. For the first pass, tie a knot in the casing for the end and add a tiny hole. Push all of the filling into the casing until it's one continuous tube. Start from the end and choose the length of sausage you want, then make a gap to get the end of the link. Twist the casing around to tighten. Continue down to the tube to keep making same sized sausages. Let the cool. Before or after cooking, depending on whether you smoke, grill, boil or fry, you can cut the spaces between the sausages. Go look at some youtube videos for how-to. The extra air is fine, you just have longer casings than you would otherwise

10/12/2016

I have both the new and old stuffer grinder. the old one cracked after many years, not unexpected. Bought a new one with the magic all-in-one plunger wrench, its garbage. Luckily I still had the wooden plunger from the old grinder, which works wonderfully. Seems like the designer never actually used the new plunger.

Disappointed

9/16/2016

Bought this product a week ago. Had my daughter and a good friend come over to have a sausage making party. Everyone who gave this product a critique about the plunger is correct. I was not grinding the meat as it was cut extremely small but used the auger to stuff the casings. Too much air got into the casing because the plunger didn't work well. The meat continually got stuck, squashed, oozed from gaps everywhere. So I came online to see if Kitchenaid makes a 1.5" attachment and found that I'm not the only one extremely disappointed. So sorry I wasted my money on this. There were a lot of other products comparable in price that would have been better. I trusted Kitchenaid name. I won't do that again

Terrible plunger design

7/15/2016

Like other reviewers have stated, the plunger's diameter is just too small and doesn't create any type of seal and also allows air in. While pushing the meat down the tube the meat just squishes around the edges. I even kept the meat in the freezer ahead of time to keep it cold as is recommended for sausage making. I abandoned attempting to make sausages altogether and ended up pan frying the meat in patties. This product is so bad it actually prompted me to write my first review of a product ever.

Really flawed design

6/24/2016

As others have noted, the plunger design is inadequate. As the plunger is smaller in diameter than the feed tube, there is no way to keep the auger full. If you use it, you will starve the casing and introduce air into the system. I would guess that a larger diameter plunger might work, but I'm not going to waste more money on this attachment.

I DO AGREE WITH EVERYONE ABOUT THE PUSHER. I FIXED THE PROBLEM BY PURCHASING A WOODEN DOWEL THE SAME DIAMETER AS THE TUBE. YOU CAN ROUND BOTH ENDS WITH SAND PAPER AND SOAK IN OLIVE OIL FOR A DAY YOU GET NO MEAT STICKING ON THE PUSHER AND NO AIR POCKETS. HOPE THIS HELPS EVERYONE.

Worst product I've ever dealt with

12/30/2015

Products that work poorly or break quickly are annoying, but not nearly as annoying as products that do not work at all and do more harm than good. Such is the case with this piece. I tried it twice, once as directed and once trying to troubleshoot...no matter what I tried this piece does not work for stuffing. I managed to get a few links, in about an hour. This is unacceptabe. It takes too long and works too poorly to produce decent quality sausage. The meat gets too warm, the machine turns it into a nasty paste and it incorporates so much air that what little is produced, is a terrible product. This will be going in the trash. The grinder portion is OK, very slow but it get the job done. The stuffer is where the problem lies.

The solution for the stuffer

6/24/2015

I agree with most of the people that are positively reviewing the grinder and complaining about the stuffer. If you follow the instructions you will not be happy. BUT ... if you don't use the worm retainer that should stay between the worm and the horn, hell turns into heaven! Meet is pushed flawlessly and quickly. Try it and review your review of this product! Actually if you think about it, this retainer is actually useless. It was meant to hold the worm back in place. But as the worm pushes the meat forward while stuffing, it tends to push itself back (action-reaction) so that the retainer is only giving you trouble. I'm giving an average because I had to troubleshoot the product to find a solution for it, but I actually love it.

No problems for me!

5/29/2015

I must admit, I was a little leery about buying this attachment after reading all of the bad reviews. But, one of my main reasons for buying the Kitchenaid Artisan Mixer, besides baking of course, was to get the meat grinder and sausage stuffer attachment, so I could make home made kielbasa like my mom used to. I can't understand why these other reviewers had so many problems. I grew up helping my mom and dad make sausage, so I pretty much knew what I was doing. I didn't have any problems with air bubbles, and the plunger from the meat grinder worked fine to help push the meat through to stuff it. A full size casing fit onto the stuffer just fine, of course you have to bunch it up, but it fit. The end result was perfect kielbasa, and I'm proud to be able to carry on my mom and dad's legacy.

Possible, just like herding cats.

FullHelmetBeard 3/21/2015

It can be done. With some youtube research and a lot of stubborn determination, I made about 2 dozen satisfying-looking sausages. The other reviewers are largely correct, however - it's not very good. I can attest to the meat-grinding potential of attachment. It does a fine job cutting pork, with which I've had significant trouble in the past due to its high fat content. Though the blade is prone to getting choked up on the gristle, I was able to get through 14 pounds of pork shoulder with only one stop to remove excess fat. I recommend following the 1-inch cube guide lines more or less, however, because a longer strand of meat, while within the capacity of the grinder, doesn't do well with the worm and causes excess strain on the mixer. 1.5 x 1.5 inch squares worked fine for me. Then there's the sausage stuffer. With all that ground pork, I went out and bought the horn (they're sold separately at our local Fred Meyer) and followed the instructions to the T. This would be a great sausage maker for a proctology student, because I was basically stuffing the intestines by hand. I think that the problem isn't with the horn being plastic, though. With the ring screwed on completely, I had no meat-leakage and no air getting in through the seal. The real problem with this is that the worm was definitively designed to grind cohesive meat, not push deconstructed granules. The worm has a significant-enough gap between it and the wall of the chamber that as it tries to push the meat forward, it squelches backward over the screw and makes no progress. The only way to get it to go forward is to pressurize the the meat from behind by pressing more into the chamber from above. Here's where everyone is running into air. The push-bar/ring-loosener combo that comes with it is also designed for the grinder. While it serves its purpose well there, it was also given a nice gap around the sides, so it would be easy to use to push meat and vegetables with. That gap is where all the meat squirts up from, because in order to push a (practical) liquid, you need a seal. You won't find it here. The result is that when you pull up on your plunger, you create a large vacuum that the freshly squelched meat falls back on, making an air pocket. This gets into your sausage casing and you start over or struggle through to the end. I won't recommend the procedure, but I followed a how-to-sausage video online which was titled "How to Make Homemade Sausage" by food farmer earth (I'm not affiliated, but I am grateful. I thumbs-upped it). In the video, the guy conveniently used this same system. His technique, and the one I followed, was to forgo the plunger and push the meat in by hand. The tunnel to the worm is long enough your fingers can't get in there, but I used three fingers at once anyway to be certain of my safety and to get enough pressure to move the sausage. What you're doing is essentially pressing the meat by hand through a long funnel into a casing. If you're careful, you get little or no air this way. My best was about 3 feet of sausage before air got in. If you keep the air that gets in up at the horn, you can largely keep it out of your sausage. Poke holes in the links when you're all done to release any air you missed, and the spin it a little more to tighten it. Also, if you're doing multiple flavors like I did, I'd recommend a drop of food coloring on the end of one flavor to signal when the last of it has come out Slap the next flavor on top and keep forcing it through. That way you don't have to start this grueling process over from the beginning, since you already have a chamber-full of meat with no air in it. Oh, yeah, and you can get WAY more than "3 or 4 feet" of casing on there effectively. TL;DR It's a good enough grinder for even fatty pork almost-warm meats, but the sausage stuffer horn was a nice afterthought that they didn't modify the grinder to work with it at all. Grinder: B+/A-, Stuffer: 60% D Still Reading Because I'm Enraptured: Tomorrow I plan to grind the next 12 two pork shoulders (there was quite a sale) but instead of using the mixer, I'll poke the horn though a gallon ziploc bag, fill it with meat, and squirt it into the casing like it was frosting. That'll be a whole lot easier on my hands, back and feet, I think.

Pretty awful

Deviate 12/30/2014

Don't waste your money. It seems like a good/cheap accessory to add to your food grinder, but it's way more frustrating than its worth. Took me and my roommate over an hour to get ~2lbs of bratwurst stuffed with this thing. Inconsistent feed, tons of air bubbles, the meat pusher they include with the grinder kit works well for grinding but is worthless for stuffing already ground foods... It's a terrible system.

Absolutely Useless

Nick F 12/26/2014

This is absolutely useless for stuffing sausage. If the plunger had the same diameter as the throat - so that it could act more like a piston - it might have some value, but it would still take an inordinate amount of effort. As it is, it took me forever to stuff just three links' worth and the continuous plunging up and down turned the sausage into an emulsified paste.

decent meat grinder, unacceptable sausage stuffer

Tim King 12/26/2014

Last night, I used the KitchenAid FGA to grind 20 pounds of pork butt. Although it was a bit slower than dedicated grinders, and required me to cut the raw meat into smaller chunks, I knew what I was probably getting into with an entry-level attachment for an existing appliance and was generally pleased with the results. After refrigerating the ground meat overnight, I expected to have an equally satisfying experience putting the ground pork into casings using the KitchenAid SSA. Unfortunately, that was not the case. The tapered stuffing horn isn't long enough to accommodate a standard length of hog casing without bunching up, and the reduced diameter of the nozzle output increases resistance and makes pushing the ground meat into the throat of the FGA a real chore. The critical flaw it that the pusher/wrench tool (while it works fine for pushing meat into the auger/worm mechanism for grinding) is not properly designed for pushing already ground meat into the auger/worm mechanism for stuffing sausages. It doesn't make an airtight seal with the throat of the FGA like you get with single-purpose stuffers that have an o-ring, and it doesn't have an escape valve for trapped air to get pushed out. The result is a messy and ineffectual stuffing effort that's more frustrating than anything else. I love all my KitchenAid appliances and accessories, but this is the exception. I will continue to use the KitchenAid FGA for grinding small batches of meat, but I will be going out to get a real stuffer tomorrow. Today's experience with the SSA was bad enough that I have no desire to repeat it again.

stuffer is useless

BillP 10/9/2014

We used our Kitchenaid Mixer to make sausage. The grinder attachment worked well, we ground 16 lbs. of pork. However when we tried to stuff the sausage this Stuffer would not feed the sausage. It is totally useless. We had to run out to Sportsman's Warehouse and buy a sausage stuffer (Lee Vertical Stuffer), it worked perfectly. Don't waste your money.

Awful!

moocherino 6/28/2014

I bought this to make hiking snack sticks. It is terrible. Takes forever to stuff sausage of any length and the stuffer does not fit the vertical column to feed the meat into the spiral. This means that the meat goes AROUND the stuffer and shoots back up, so you are literally accomplishing 15% of the sausage you should be. No way recommend, I'll be looking for a new sausage stuffer or will just have it done professionally.
